Compared to the Mainland, there aren't that many places of ancient historical interest. War, earthquakes and typhoons have taken their toll and even the oldest temples have mostly been rebuilt.

The recorded history of Taiwan only extends back 400 years or so, although recently discovered ancient burial sites in Taitung have spurred an interest in the "Prehistory of Taiwan". The National Museum of Prehistory in Taitung is worth a visit.

Buildings from the Japanese era form the bulk of places to see, and are now becoming protected by law.
