Hi everyone, I am from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and has been working with an engineering firm in Taichung for a year (almost!)
After the bump, crash and trying to fit in, I am finally ready to meet more people. Been spending about a month reading about the forums before deciding to join in.
Currently experimenting with riding a bike, we got no MRT in Taichung (hence no bike = no legs). It has been a hairy experience for me, since I have not ridden a bike often in KL.
Happy to meet all of you, and I am fluent in both Chinese & English, so any help in the Chinese language, I would be glad to assist!

Cheerio...

Hey MIT, welcome to the Ho!

I'm a big fan of Taichung, so it's good to know someone down there. Some of my favorite threads about "Fun City" (although seriously outdated now) are here and here. It would be great to hear what people are up to down there.

Last visit we stayed at Hotel ONE which was nice. I want to take the lad down to visit the Science Museum in a year or so.

"Fun City"
I've been to almost every state in Taiwan (Taipei all the way to Ping Tong), but I like Taichung because it less hectic than Taipei, and a half hours ride and you are out of town to those charming little farms, scenic mountains and friendly locals (been to Miaoli often too).
So you got all the convenience of the city with nature not far away.
And best of all, cheap cheap cheap...
You pay like something around NT$8000 for a duplex suite (one bedroom though). My sis got the same thing in Taipei for like NT$17000.
The downside I think it is the food, can't seem to find authentic western cuisine here, most of it are catered to the Taiwanese palette. So I have perfected the art of cooking with a toaster (no kitchen at my place) :P
Oh yes and the crazy bikers...

Sounds like you're having a good time down there in Taichung, MIT. I'm surprised you can't find good Western food though. I know it's just sandwiches, but head over to Fingas Base Camp. They bake good bread and make decent sandwiches. I think they do a retail business and sell things like chips (crisps) and Dr. Pepper among other niceties. Didn't make it to Fingas last time we were down in Fun City so next time it's a must.

There are a few western style food places in that area behind the Sogo...Frog, Fingas...used to be a German deli there as well...but I'm carbondating myself.

Talk about dating yourself, do you remember the Napoli Pizza in Taichung--supposedly the best pizza restaurant in all of Taiwan? (And I don't mean the fried chicken/pizza franchise.) I heard they shut up shop though which is a shame. I really liked their pizza the few times I went there.

Will check out Finga's this weekend or the next... (I might plan on heading to Taipei)
Meanwhile it is chicken curry time! slurp... Hope my Taiwanese neighbour don;t complain about the odd cooking smell wharfing out of the room >:)
I just realized a few months ago you can get those Indian curry powder and Indonesian / Thai spices from the foreign workers shop around Fu Xing Road. Nice...
