T'would be nice if health food restaurants took their place, but somehow I don't see that happening.

There's a decent organic/health food shop up the road in Gongguan. It's opposite the TaiPower Building. One of the best ones I've found in Taiwan in fact. But I agree that it wouldn't be the best choice for Gongguan south of the Shui Yuan Market...

Well, I really mean an omnipresent chain, rather than the occasional, far-flung solo joint. Gongguan is far from Donghu. :(

Restaurants should provide SOME healthy choices. Y'know, if Mister Donut also had whole-grain, baked bagels or something, I wouldn't be so down on them.

Some of their donuts taste like crap. That should make you happy Dragonbones.

Surely you are not tethered to Neihu District. Just hop on the 278. It's a long ride but eventually you'll wind up in Gongguan. :)

I think the solo joints are much better than the chains. Don't get me wrong, the Santa Cruz/Uni-President organic shops are fine, but they can't hold a candle to the one I mentioned in the above post. These are grocery/market type establishments, mind you, not technically restaurants.

As for restaurants providing healthy choices, I'm down with that. But Mister Donut is a donut shop. It's more like a bakery than a restaurant, so I think it might be exempt from the discussion. Come to think of it, they do offer a Japanese green-tea style ring donut. That may be the one Doc is referring to there. I bet it's as healthy as a lot of the night market/street vendor fare they cook up in the adjacent alleys...

For some reason, the museum of sewer pipes just doesn't bring the crowds in like you'd think it would.
