World Cup 2014 in Taiwan

Where to watch the World Cup in Taiwan 2014

Whilst the World Cup is not actually in Taiwan, there is a high level of interest in the competition here. Consequently, pubs and clubs that would normally shun any kinds of sports coverage put in a screen, and those with a sporting tendency go into overdrive.

Given the time difference with Brazil (games will start at 12 am to 6 am; visit the FIFA page and click “Change to local time” to get the full schedule in Taiwan time), those of us who are interested in watching a game will be relieved that they will all also be shown on television.

For regular cable, the old faithful MUCH TV (channel 38) will screen games (website in Chinese only). It is unlikely on past experience that they will have English audio coverage (i.e. no SAP), but I would put money on ads for a cold medicine (Yong Si Si) and Hong Kong foot cream. Still, it’s better than any dodgy feed. [Update June 29th: there has been an issue with the MUCH satellite, and channel 56 has shown the last couple of games. Check our forums for latest news on the channels showing the games.]

If you have MOD, Chonghua Telecom are going going all out with an app to enable watching games on mobile devices, but more importantly they will screen the games through ELTA TV on channels 169 and 170 (ELTA website in Chinese only; MOD website also in Chinese only). The 2012 Olympics were shown in HD and in dual language (i.e. with SAP), and if the quality is the same for the World Cup it will be the best coverage ever in Taiwan. [Update June 13th: the Brazil vs. Croatia game did indeed have English commentary via SAP (lower right hand button on the controller) and the picture quality was excellent.]

If you would like to go out, there will be many places showing the games as mentioned above. We have chosen some in Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung, but this list is by no means exhaustive. It is also possible that you will need to make a reservation even at places that do not usually require one, so please check before you go.

If you know of other locations or own an establishment and would like to add your details, either contact us here or drop us an email at worldcup2014@taiwanho.com and we will add them to the list. Please note this email address will self-destruct on July 13th (the day of the final). Please also feel free to join our World Cup discussion in the forums.
